COALITION FOR A SOUND DOLLAR
The Coalition for a Sound Dollar is a broad coalition of agriculture,
manufacturing, and services organizations brought together to address
the overvaluation of the dollar. Since 2001, the Coalition for a Sound
Dollar has been working together to deliver a strong, unified message
about the ongoing damage being done by an overvalued dollar.
When the dollar is overvalued, it causes difficult times in terms of
competitiveness, jobs, and future economic growth.
The coalition is associated with the National Association of Manufacturers
(NAM) lobby. The coalition and NAM have gathered statistics to show
how the dollar has appreciated nearly 30% since the beginning of 1997,
and 10% in the past year alone. The dollar is at its highest level in
15 years.
As a result, many U.S. products are being literally priced out of the
markets abroad and at home. U.S. exports have dropped by more than $50
billion from last year. Agriculture, aircraft, automobiles and parts,
paper and forest products, machine tools, medical equipment, steel and
other producers are being dramatically affected. Small, independent
firms are especially hard hit. As the coalition writes, no amount of
cost-cutting can offset a nearly 30% markup.
Production and productivity are down and coinciding with a general
economic slowdown. According to the National Association of Manufacturers
(NAM) statistics, manufacturing employment has fallen by more than 830,000
jobs since mid-2000 and the U.S. trade deficit is well past the $400
billion mark. Nearly 100,000 export-related jobs have been lost in the
agricultural sector alone.
Coalition for a Sound Dollar is a way to join a group with a loud voice
that sees the downfall of this country in its greed and neglect of its
own industries and currency. The coalition doesn’t cost anything
to join. They just expect members to commit to working together to educate
about the effects of the overvalued dollar and the negative effect of
its impact on the U.S. economy.
Anyone who signs on as a member of the Coalition for a Sound Dollar
will soon begin receiving information, talking points, press contacts,
lobbying and advocacy priorities, and other information via e-mail.
